The Wisdom of Diana Nyad
August 24, 2012
I latched on to Diana Nyad's story a few days ago. The 62-year old athlete who attempted to swim from the marina in Havana, Cuba to Key West, Florida, a course that tracks 106 miles. This area is home to abundant marine life, including friendly dolphins and not so friendly sharks as well as menacing jelly fish that appear from below undetected.
Diana had been champion swimmer who gave it up for 30 years. Why return at this advanced stage of life? Because of a vision that formed within her. She is of Cuban descent and wanted to challenge herself, so the swim became a mission.
No problem swimming the 106 miles. She trained extensively and was quite able. The problem lied in the unknowns out there. Storms that come up out of nowhere, sharks that find her interesting, and jelly fish that quietly head to the surface after dusk with tentacles that sting. Other than that it is a party!
Because of her inner wiring Diana set forth on this journey last Saturday. She got about half way and had to be taken out of the water. Why? Serious jelly fish stings, and horrendous weather. Mother nature won this time, Diana's fourth time trying this marathon. Did she fail?
Dan's Suggestions:
1. This woman is a winner, inside and out. Her vision, determination, and resolve are without question impressive.
2. Her example is a reminder pursue opportunities that are difficult. In pursuing the struggle you often find yourself along the way. Her inner toughness was tested and fortified.
3. Diana's example gives us permission to dream and pursue. If a 62-year old swimmer can do that, imagine what is inside of you that is wanting to get out!
The Go & Do For You: What is in your head that you would like to convert to action?
